14 June, 2025Aluminum carpentry, as we know it today, has its roots in constructive solutions such as the one we see in this image: a mixed iron and aluminum window, common in buildings in Barcelona around 1975.
This system consisted of a main structure made of iron profile, which provided rigidity and structural strength, while the glazing beads were made of aluminum, used to hold the glass more easily and offer better resistance to corrosion. This detail marked a technical turning point: aluminum began to be introduced in strategic areas of the windows because of its lightness, durability and ease of machining.
It was a hybrid solution that optimized the resources available at the time, combining the best of both materials. From a technical perspective, we can say that this system was the first step towards the specialization of the aluminum carpentry trade, differentiating it little by little from traditional metal carpentry.
Today, this typology is considered the functional and technical origin of modern aluminum carpentry, which has evolved into today’s systems with thermal bridge break, extruded profiles, multipoint closures and high performance glazing.
